Generator exhaust systems are responsible for directing exhaust gases produced by a generator's internal combustion engine to a safe location outside the building or facility. These systems are specifically designed to handle and even reduce the harmful emissions produced by the generator under load.

Generator exhaust systems are composed of different interconnected parts. At the start of the system, an exhaust manifold collects the gases as they exit the engine's cylinders. These gases are then directed into the muffler, a device that attenuates the high sound pressure created by the exhaust and reduces noise. Some systems have catalytic converters as well, which chemically treat the exhaust gases to reduce their pollutant content.

Finally, the exhaust pipe serves as a conduit, directing the treated gases to an outlet located outside the building. This component can have various configurations depending on the layout of the building and the environmental constraints; it could be directed through a wall or roof or may be installed underground in a trench.

The design of the exhaust system is significant, with the goal being to minimize backpressure in the system. Too much backpressure can restrict the flow and build up heat, reducing the efficiency and run time of the generator while simultaneously increasing engine wear and emissions.
