Generator fuel filters are vital components in the operation of any fuel-powered generator. They are usually cylindrical in shape, made of a robust casing containing a filter media typically made of synthetic material, paper or a fine metal mesh. Their primary function is to filter out any dirt, rust, dust, and other contaminants from the fuel before it reaches the engine.

These filters are strategically placed in the fuel line, meaning they play a protective role between the fuel tank and the generator’s engine. Without a fuel filter, these impurities could potentially reach and damage the engine.

Generators often carry two types of filters; the primary and the secondary fuel filters. The primary filter cleanses the fuel when it leaves the tank, while the secondary filter does the same when the fuel exits the fuel pump.

The fuel filter effectiveness is measured by its micron rating, indicating the smallest particle size that the filter can successfully trap and keep out of the fuel. A lower micron rating implies a better filtration capability.
